Part 2 : Angles and Interpretations
In this assignment, I'm to choose 3 subject in the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia to photograph from a number of different angles. This should NOT be a picture of a person, or a large space such as the university building or the gym. It should be a piece of machinery, a staircase, or some other such object/subject.

Set 1
Place : Stadium Sports Complex, UTM Skudai
1st Picture : f/6.3 | 1/40s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@55mm) 2nd Picture : f/6.3 | 1/40s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@55mm) 3rd Picture : f/6.3 | 1/80s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@55mm) 4th Picture : f/6.3 | 1/80s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@55mm) 5th Picture : f/5.6 | 1/60s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@55mm) The most difficult part when taking this picture was finding the right angle. If I shoot the object at direct sunlight it would make the picture high in contrast and the object will look dark like in picture number 5. The bright sun create an unattractive deep shadows. I can eliminate the shadows by using flash to lighten the object. But in these assignment Dr Jamal doesn't allow us to use flash. My favorite shot would be the 4th picture because the background doesn't show much distraction. If you can see the other picture is distracted with grill and chairs. The background color of picture number 4 is orange which gives a dramatic perspective. Picture number 4 shows that shoot which has emphasize gives direct attention to the subject. Shooting the object in diagonal position creates direct attention to the subject. |

Set 2
Place : Desa Bakti Lake, UTM Skudai
1st Picture : f/6.3 | 1/25s | ISO-800 (Nikon D3100@50mm) 2nd Picture : f/6.3 | 1/25s | ISO-800 (Nikon D3100@50mm) 3rd Picture : f/6.3 | 1/25s | ISO-800 (Nikon D3100@50mm) 4th Picture : f/6.3 | 1/25s | ISO-800 (Nikon D3100@50mm) 5th Picture : f/6.3 | 1/25s | ISO-800 (Nikon D3100@50mm) These shot was taken at 7pm and it was almost maghrib prayer. So I had to finish my shooting as soon as possible. My challange when trying to take these shot was finding the right angle. If I shoot in a straight angle it would make the shot looks boring as in picture number 5. My favorite shot would be picture number 2. I had to go down on my knees to capture the lamp post in a worms eye view angle. By this angle it creates a striking effect and it make my subject looks superior. Generally, the lower the camera angle, the less flattering the photo will be. |

Set 3
Place : Kolej Tun Hussein Onn resident, UTM Skudai
1st Picture : f/14 | 1/60s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@55mm) 2nd Picture : f/14 | 1/60s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@55mm) 3rd Picture : f/14 | 1/60s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@26mm) 4th Picture : f/14 | 1/80s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@18mm) 5th Picture : f/13 | 1/160s | ISO-200 (Nikon D3100@26mm) 6th Picture : f/14 | 1/60s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@55mm) There’s something about this Tabebuia Pentaphylla tree that gets to me. First of its soft pink color and second because it looks like Cherry Blossom - Sakura tree which is popular in Korea. My favorite shot would be picture number 3. By capturing the flower in closeup would make a greater impact than capturing the cherry blossom tree as a whole. You can see the difference between picture number 3 and 5. When I get up close to a flower with camera it creates an intimate portrait that reveals details the shape and color of the flower. By shooting from directly above like in picture number 2 and 6 will change the angle of the sun hitting the subject and camera. It gives my image a completely different feel. The weakness of capturing closeup image is that the closest focusing distance of the lens I'm using; the closer to my subject than that limit allows, therefore I won't be able to get a sharp picture. |
