Assignment 2
Part 1 : Basic Composition
For this assignment I should shoot at least 10 photos of life at University Teknologi Malaysia campus. The photos should demonstrate an understanding five basic composition of photography such as simplicity, rule of thirds, line, balance and framing.

Simplicity
1st Picture : f/5.6 | 1/25s | ISO-200 (Nikon D3100@55mm)
2nd Picture : f/5.6 | 1/250s | ISO-200 (Nikon D3100@55mm) 3rd Picture : f/5 | 1/160s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@38mm) Place : lake@Tropical garden, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My friend Siti Aminah has been my model for that day. By capturing her from low angle it shows an effect that she looks bigger. And also by capturing her from high angle it shows an effect that she looks smaller. By choosing her as the subject rather than background is the best way to get a good photo. When we look for uncomplicated backgrounds and try to focus on keeping objects out of the picture it may draw attention away from the subject. You can see example shot in the third picture where the viewer eyes are distracted by the tall grass and hut on the lake. Therefore its better to move closer upwards or downwards on the subject to make the photo simplified. |

Rule of Thirds
1st Picture : f/25 | 1/80 | ISO-200 (Nikon D3100@55mm)
2nd Picture : f/10 | 1/50 | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@18mm) Place : lake@Tropical garden, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To make photography picture looks interesting the position of the subject should be place in either 1/3 or 2/3 of the frame. It would look awkward if the subject is in the middle. The first picture shows the duck on the right side of the imaginary lines. The second picture is another example picture that follows the rule of thirds for a landscape photo. The bark of the tree and the shadow of the tree is position on the left side of the imaginary lines. The focus is on the shadow of the tree rather than the tree bark. So the bottom two-thirds of the photograph are filled with land. |

Line
1st Picture : f/22 | 1/30s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@55mm)
Place : Stadium Sports Complex, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lines play an important role in composition to guide the eyes through picture. Here is a classic example a picture of a road I took at Stadium Sports Complex. Curved lines can lead viewer on a journey around the frame, leading towards the main subject. 2nd Picture : f/11 | 1/60s | ISO-200 (Nikon D3100@50mm) Place : Sultanah Zanariah Library, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The second picture shows a students walking under the rooftop walking towards the camera. You can see using lines can put the subject in the middle of the composition without losing dynamic but simply positioning it in the intersection between two lines. This picture I shot was on a straight angle. 3rd Picture : f/10 | 1/250s | ISO-200 (Nikon D3100@50mm) Place : Sultanah Zanariah Library, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vertical shot often suggest permanence and stability. This picture shows a line of motorcycle parked in front of the library. The black and white stripes helps to lead viewer attention to the line of motorcycle. I simplify it by moving my camera viewpoint in close to the base of the motorcycle tyre. |

Balance
1st Picture : f/6.3 | 1/250s | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@55mm)
Place : Kolej Tun Hussein Onn, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This closeup shot of a flower shows a symmetrical which is identical in relation to a center line or axis. This shot lead a good point of interest and to a striking image. 2nd Picture : f/5.6 | 1/100 | ISO-200 (Nikon D3100@55mm) Place : Stadium Sports Complex, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The same kind of harmony can also be reached using a symmetric composition, as that created by three parallel blue lines in the swimming pool. The diving board splits the view in half creating harmony, balance and proportion. It soothes the eyes and mind of the viewer. 3rd Picture : f/32 | 1/50 | ISO-200 (Nikon D3100@55mm) Place : Desa Bakti Lake, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The picture shows that balance can also be shot vertically. As you can see the top and bottom parts are equal. The bottom part is the reflection of the coconut tree. 4th Picture : f/25 | 1/80s | ISO-200 (Nikon D3100@55mm) Place : lake@Tropical garden, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the picture you can see two ducks balancing each side of the image. The ducks are in the same size and color. And also they are swimming parallel together creating an energy to the composition. |

Framing
1st Picture : f/5.6 | 1/500 | ISO-200 (Nikon D3100@55mm)
Place : lake@Tropical garden, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Framing the duck with grass brings more depth to the picture and a better focus on what the main subject is. 2nd Picture : f/13 | 1/60 | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@50mm) Place : Masjid Sultan Ismail, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This picture shows a day after Fridays prayer. Framing can lead the eyes towards your main focal point. 3rd Picture : f/14 | 1/100 | ISO-100 (Nikon D3100@55mm) Place : Kolej Tun Husseion Onn, UTM Skudai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Framing the signboard with flowers and leafs makes the picture looks more interesting rather than nothing at all. Generally putting something in the foreground adds an extra dimension to the shot. |
